World’s top Solar Cooking Experts coming to Indore !!       

As a matter of great pride and honour, Indore would host more than 50 experts of solar cooking from across the world, as our city would become the centre of activities and learning for participants of the Sixth Solar Cookers International (SCI) World Conference to be held in Vadodara, India, Jan 16-18, 2017 !!  

In the pre-conference programme, Ms. Julie Greene, Executive Director, SCI, would be coming from Sacramento (USA) to Indore !! She would be here from January 11 to 14, 2017 and be the Chief Guest of a series of solar cooking programmes organised by the Jimmy McGilligan Centre For Sustainable Development !! She would also launch a new Solar  Cooker made by Mr. Deval Verma  (a renowned metal artist of Indore, and product design intern at Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development, working under the supervision of Dr. (Ms.) Janak Palta McGilligan !! Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan is the recipient of Padma Shri Award by the President of India !! Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian awards in India !! 
 
The inventor of this cooker Prof. Celestino Rodrigues Ruivo, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Institute of Engineering of University of Algarve, Campus da Penha Faro, Portugal, would also give live demonstration of the Cooker !! Prof. Ruivo will also be delivering a lecture at IIT Indore and Pragya Girls School as well as to the slum children of  'Participative Development Initiative', a local NGO !! 

Prof. Celistino and Ms. Julie Greene will stay with Dr. Janak at her residence/centre in Sanawadiya, near Indore !! They would then go to Vadodara for the 6th World Conference on Solar Cooking to be held at Muni Seva Ashram, where world’s most influential solar cooking experts – scientists, entrepreneurs, policy makers, educators, field project managers, etc. from more than 25 countries – will share their transformative work in Green technologies !! At the conference, Prof. R. L. Sawhney, former head, School of Energy and Environment, DAVV, Indore, will be a key-note speaker and Dr. Janak will be one of the main speakers on 'Promoting Solar Cooking Technologies by Integrating Organic Food and All Other Products for Accomplishing Sustainable Development Goals: the Way Forward' !! 



Post Conference programme: Following the conference, a real-life experience to an incredible variety of solar-powered cooking systems in India awaits the global experts !!    

On January 21, more than 50 of these solar cooking experts would come all the way to village Sanawadiya, near Indore, at the Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development and an organic farm, established by Dr. McGilligan !! The centre has the world’s 12 different types of Solar Cookers and a Solar PV Power Plant Hybrid with Wind, where power is generated not only for the centre but is also supplied to the village nearby to illuminate the street lights !!  

On Jan 22, 2017, the experts would visit Indore's renowned and the first organic farmers' market and outlet Jaivik Setu and then head to the Barli Development Institute for Rural Women where, late Mr. Jimmy McGilligan (Dr. Janak's husband) installed the first large Solar Community Kitchen with Scheffler dishes and solar storage system, way back in 1998 for direct cooking and also India's only heat storage system !! The Institute trains tribal girls in various skills for their empowerment, where about 7,500 girls have received training during the last 32 years !! Dr. Janak, founder and director of this institute, will personally accompany the participants !! 

More than 15 people from Indore will participate in this, including Prof. Ashish Dubey, Ms. Anuradha Dubey, Mr. Uday Bhole, Deputy CEO, Jaivik Setu and Scintech Eco Foundation, mechanical engineering students and graduates, and youth interested in the area of solar cooking technologies !! 

Dr. McGilligan sees Indore having the best potential to become a smart city using solar cooking !! Food processing and related technologies for Food Parks, Namkeen Clusters and  Organic farmers in particular, and for all land-based agro/herbal/natural cleaning and cosmetics products manufacturing companies !!
